The 19th African Union Summit will take place from July 13 – 18, 2012 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia change of venue from Lilongwe, Malawi under the theme of "Boosting Intra-Africa Trade" and "2012 year of Shared Values". Fahamu through our Emerging Powers in Africa initiative has completed the selection process of five journalists from applications
received from Media professionals in print, broadcast, radio and online fora from Africa, India, China and Brazil.
The journalists have been chosen to participate in the Summit and provide analysis and insight on the events during the 4-day visit.
The individuals:
Tanu Jalloh – Sierra Leone
Biography
Tanu Jalloh is a Sierra Leonean journalist who has edited at least three local newspapers either as consultant or full time editor. He has also contributed to international magazines and online publications.
Now as Business and Economy Editor for Politico Newspaper, Tanu is honing his skills on corporate communication, good governance and collaborative media.
Christine Chisha – Zambia
Biography
Christine Chisha is a Journalist who joined the Zambia daily mail in 2002 and now works for its sister paper Sunday Mail.
She has have travelled widely writing features and stories on environment, health and good governance.
Sheila Naturinda- Uganda
Biography
Sheila Naturinda has worked as a News reporter for Monitor Publications in Uganda from 2007 to date. She was previously a Teacher at Kololo High school in Uganda. She holds a masters degree in Public Relations & Media Management from Cavendish University Uganda as well as a Certificate in news writing & newsroom management from the Nation Media Nairobi Kenya.
Manish Chand- India
Biography
Manish Chand is currently Senior Editor (Foreign Affairs)/Diplomatic Editor with Indo-Asian News Service (IANS) and the Editor of Africa Quarterly, a journal focused on African issues and India-Africa relations, published by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR). He is editor of “Two Billion Dreams: Celebrating India-Africa Friendship,” a book capturing myriad facets of India-Africa relationship in word and pictures. The book was launched by Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in the presence of African leaders at the second Africa-India Forum Summit in Addis Ababa in May 2011.
In his journalistic career spanning over 15 years, He has also worked for India’s leading publications/dailies, including The Times of India Tehelka and The Asian Age.
Paulo Rogerio- Brazil
Biography
Paulo Rogério Nunes (Brazil) is the co-founder and executive director of the Instituto Midia Etnica and the news portal Correio Nagô that focuses on issues of diversity, human rights and is the leading online community targeting the Afro-Brazilian population.
He is a Ashoka Fellow and a blogger and writer for the Americas Quarterly Magazine from New York. He is currently in the United States in a Fulbright Humphrey Fellowship program at the University of Maryland.
