The Foreign Ministry reports that the Republic of Korea took over the coordination of MIKTA from Mexico this Monday. Korea will now coordinate the meetings of the foreign ministers for the next year. Mexico has facilitated the consultations of this forum since September 2013.
MIKTA is an informal forum for discussion for Mexico, Indonesia, the Republic of Korea, Turkey and Australia. It aims to strengthen the ties between these countries, allow for an exchange of views and to consult and promote coordination on global issues of common interest.
During the year that Mexico coordinated MIKTA, there were two meetings of the foreign ministers: the first on September 25, 2013 in New York, and the second on April 13-14, 2014 in Mexico City. The meetings have been to discuss international issues, strategies to promote bilateral relations and an agenda for cooperation.
The MIKTA foreign ministers adopted the following declarations:
• Joint press releases on MIKTA meetings
• Joint statement on the situation in the Korean Peninsula
• Joint press release on the downing of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17
• A joint editorial entitled “MIKTA, A Force for Good”
In addition, the first MIKTA academic seminar was held in Mexico City. Its recommendations will be presented to the foreign ministers at their next meeting during the United Nations General Assembly in New York later this month.
At the initiative of the Mexican embassies in the G20 countries, seminars on MIKTA have been scheduled with government officials and academics to provide international public opinion with information about the dialogue.
