Synopsis
• Between 1997 and 2012, total trade between Brazil and Africa grew at an annual compound growth rate of 14.41%, exceeding growth in Brazil’s total trade with the World which grew at an annual compound growth rate of 9.92% over the same period.
• This increase in total trade reflects fairly similar rates of growth for Brazil’s imports from and exports to Africa, which grew at annual compound growth rates of 14.02% and 14.90% respectively.
• However, Brazil’s total trade with Africa fell by 4.27% between 2011 and 2012.
• Brazil’s exports to Africa in 2012 were valued at US$12.2 billion, while the country’s imports from Africa were valued at US$14.3 billion, resulting in Brazil recording a deficit in trade with Africa in 2012.
• In fact, apart from in 2009, Brazil has recorded a negative trade balance in its trade with Africa in every year since 1997.
