After extending for a final non-stop 24-hour negotiation between the major trading powers, the 10th Ministerial Conference of the World Trade Organization (WTO) concluded with a Ministerial Declaration that marks a turning point for the multilateral trade body according to U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman.
The EU describes it as a landmark deal that will improve the global conditions for trade and benefit developing countries in Africa and around the world by getting rid of trade distorting export subsidies in agriculture. WTO Director-General Roberto Azevêdo hailed this as the “most significant outcome on agriculture” in the organization’s 20-year history.

I attended the recent third assembly of the African Grantmakers Network (AGN) in Arusha, Tanzania. It was the first time I participated in an AGN assembly, and I had many expectations. In general, it is an excellent opportunity to meet with leading organizations in the field of philanthropy in Africa as well as other funding agencies working in Africa.
My reflection is on a session titled ‘Using Practice to Influence Policy: Rural Women’s Leadership for Equitable Food Systems, Social Justice, and Civic Mobilisation in East and West Africa’ that took place Thursday 2 July 2015.
This session was an opportunity for women from Burkina Faso and Tanzania to share their experiences Read More
Africa loses massive financial resources, about US$50 billion each year through illicit activities of multinational companies and rich individuals. These resources, if retained in the continent, could be invested in productive sectors of these economies to lift Africa’s growing population from under-development and poverty.According to the African Union/Economic Commission for Africa High Level Panel on Illicit Financial Flows from Africa report, the continent lost about one trillion dollars (US$1 trillion) between 1980 and 2008.
Other estimates are even higher. The Panel was chaired by former President Thabo Mbeki of South Africa. The multiplier effects of these losses are much larger.IFFs from Africa in real terms mean loss of jobs, income, decent education, health facilities and Read More

African CSO Statement to AU Leadership: “Exclusion of African citizens and their organisations from the AUC Summit in South Africa contradicts AU’s normative frameworks.”
We are anxious at reports that the upcoming June 2015 AU Summit, to be held in the Republic of South Africa, will be closed off to African citizens, through an extra ordinary decision by ministers, endorsed and finalized by African heads of state and government. If this happens, it will indeed be a sad day for Africa, where our leadership, supported by the African Union Commission (AUC) will be voting to make the AU a club of heads of state and governments that excludes African citizens and their Read More
