Chinese Ambassador Zhao Yanbo has said that China will soon construct a permanent lab for Sierra Leone at the Jui Hospital, and that they will take three months to complete it.
He made this statement last Friday when the two mobile labs brought in by China were being commissioned by President Koroma.
Ambassador Zhao said his government has discussed the vulnerability of Sierra Leone’s health system, and they want to help improve it by making sure the Jui hospital will become a teaching and research hospital in the future.
He said the work will start as soon as modalities have been put in place to get it done. He added that the mobile labs already commissioned will help speed up the checking process so that the transmission chain of the disease can be broken sooner rather than later.
Ambassador Zhao indicated that as a true friend of Sierra Leone, China stands together with Sierra Leone to fight against Ebola. He encouraged the Chinese medical experts to work closely with their Sierra Leonean colleagues to help Sierra Leone contain Ebola at an early date.
The Chinese Ambassador said China will continue to support Sierra Leone in its efforts to contain the virus. The Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention announced on Friday that it had successfully produced an Ebola detection kit and will use it in Sierra Leone for testing.
He stressed that China has responded to further needs of the affected areas, as will continue to provide additional assistance by sending high-level expert teams to the affected countries to share their experience of combating epidemics, working with the international community to train medical personnel for the affected countries, and pushing for the establishment of treatment centers.
“China will also give priority to health cooperation under the framework of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) to help improve the disease prevention and control systems of other African countries,” he added.
