A desalination plant financed by the the fund of emerging BRICS countries will be inaugurated on 22 March in Ribeira Brava, on the island of Sao Nicolau, Cabo Verde (Cape Verde), according to Cape Verdean news agency Inforpress.
Mayor Américo Nascimento said the unit, whose construction began in 2010, cost 150 million Cape Verdean escudos (US$1.44 million), and the BRICS fund contributed 110 million escudos and the municipality the remaining 40 million escudos.
Nascimento also said that the desalination plant had capacity to provide 1,200 cubic metres of drinking water per day, “an expeditious way to provide water of enough quality and quantity to the population, given the decrease in local springs and boreholes.”
The inauguration of the desalination plant will be attended by Prime Minister José Maria Neves, in the presence of the Minister of Environment, Housing and Territorial Planning, Antero Veiga, the coordinator of the United Nations System in Cabo Verde, Ulrika Richardson-Golinski and Brazil’s ambassador to Cabo Verde, João Inácio Padilha, among other guests.
