Fahamu is calling for applications for the 2nd Pan-African Fellowship Program (FPAF) in 2013.
This program that was launched in 2013 is held annually has a vision of nurturing African social justice leaders by establishing a fellowship programme for activists. The objective of this fellowship program is to generate contemporary, energetic, visionary and innovative thought and activism, from the local to the continental.
Through the program African activists have an opportunity to enhance their skills, experience and deepen their theoretical and practical understanding of methods for effective advocacy and creating meaningful change. At the same time the program aims to strengthen community based organisations and social movements by implementing the learning of these activists within their movements and organisations.
The Program
Over the one year, 8 selected community based organisers and social activists will participate in ongoing practical and theoretical learning through an induction and monthly workshops to enable them develop a framework for understanding the history and vision of social justice in Africa as well as the practical skills for change.
The fellows will be provided with a mentor selected on the basis of their experience, knowledge, availability and commitment to social justice leadership development.
Fellows will be attached in different host organisations or social movements on a rotational basis as an opportunity for mutual learning between the fellow and the host on tactics, tools and experiences in community organising for social justice. They will be expected to implement a specific project in their community and receive support from their mentors, peers, host organisations or movement and Fahamu.
During the fellowship period, fellows and Alumni will form a network between themselves, their host organisations, their mentors and their own organisations. The network will act as a channel for mutual support, debate, information exchange, and the sharing of resources, experiences, and learning. The network will be supported by an on line forum, capable of hosting discussion groups, wikis and blogs, coordinated and moderated by Fahamu.
Curriculum Model
Fellows will engage in mutual learning through monthly workshops on theories of change, transformative leadership for social justice, practical skills and creativity in social justice activism. They will share and receive ‘hands on’ experience by being placed in a host organisation or social movement. Fellows will gain continuous support from a mentorship process and supervision.
Expected Results
At the end of the one-year program, the fellow should have improved their individual learning qualities and leadership skills through training, mentorship and support. The fellows’ community based organizations and social justice movements should be able to locate human rights and social justice struggle within an African context and develop the tools, skills, experience and knowledge to address issues affecting poor and marginalized communities effectively.
A network of community based organisers, social justice activists and civil society leaders (within this cohort as well as cohort 1 alumni) will be established, linked in through an electronic forum, providing a channel for on-going mutual support, debate, information exchange, and the sharing of resources, experiences and learning
FELLOWS WILL BE PROVIDED WITH A LIVELIHOOD DURING THE PERIOD OF THEIR FELLOWSHIP.
Who can apply?
1. Candidates must be Kenyans aged 25-30 years;
2. Community based activists with qualities of leadership and innovation;
3. Formal education should not be a limitation to participation in the fellowship program, if relevant experience can be demonstrated;
4. Have demonstrable interest and commitment to social justice in Africa within a particular community based organisation or grassroots movement;
5. Candidates should have ability and willingness to transfer learning to their respective communities, organizations and movements;
6. The candidates must have a good working knowledge of the language in which the program is imparted i.e. English and Kiswahili;
7. Have basic computer skills;
- The candidate should be proposed and his/her candidacy supported by his/her organization and/or community. It is desirable that the sponsoring organization has a firm constituency or membership, is representative, and undertakes work on social justice advocacy.
Selection process
· The selection of fellows will reflect gender, thematic and regional balance. The general social justice situation in the respective regions or communities will be considered.
· An advisory group composed of Fahamu staff and partners will undertake the selection of successful candidates.

Fellowship applications will only be taken into consideration if they are fully completed. These includes:
A. The fellow’s application form and personal essay
B. Fellow’s community based organization or movement application form and referral letter
C. 2 recommendation letters from partner organisations from your community whom you have worked with on a social justice activism campaign
